What an HCV CVRT Test Examines & the Possible Results Explained

For anyone new to the world of commercial vehicle testing, an HCV CVRT is designed to keep Ireland's roads safe. It's a mandatory test that must be carried out every year on every commercially-used vehicle in Ireland in order to drive legally.

Whether talking about bus testing, ambulance testing, or campervan testing, they all need to go through this test. The inspection involves checking the roadworthiness of the vehicle in question so that it satisfies basic safety standards on test day.

What Gets Checked as Part of a Commercial Vehicle Test?

While commercial vehicle operators have explicit obligations with regard to engaging in daily walk-around checks, they sometimes get missed. As such, all visible & accessible components are inspected as part of commercial vehicle testing, including the following elements:

  • The condition of the vehicle's brakes

  • Vehicle lights & markings (hazardous/dangerous loads etc)

  • Whether your tyres & wheels are in a legal state

  • Your tachograph & speed limiter

  • The vehicle's chassis & underbody

  • Its steering & suspension

  • Exhaust emissions

  • Electrical systems

  • Glass & mirrors

A commercial vehicle CVRT  takes around 30-60 minutes (depending on the vehicle), and in the invent of a pass, your Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW) will be automatically posted to the registered address of the vehicle. However, if the vehicle fails, you need to rebook the test within 21 days or 4,000 miles (whichever is sooner).

Your re-test won't cost you another test fee so long as you get it done within the specified limit and go back to the same test centre. If not, a full new test will be needed, with a full test fee again needing to be paid.

Meeting All Your Commercial Vehicle CVRT Needs

Commercial vehicle testing is a very necessary part of operating a commercial vehicle in Ireland, however, it doesn't have to be drawn out and costly. By understanding the rules that surround HCV CVRT, you'll be better able to avoid the mistakes that lead to re-tests, wasted time and wasted money.
