How to Prepare Your Vehicle for Your HCV Test

At Argent Equipment, we offer a wide range of vehicle testing services that range from bus testing to jeep testing and everything in between. To those not yet in the know, commercial vehicle testing is required every year in Ireland in order to drive legally.

This kind of testing involves the thorough inspection of all commercial vehicles on an annual basis in order to ensure roadworthiness. It also involves checking all the visible areas of the vehicle so as to ensure it's regularly maintained and serviced.

Preparing Your Vehicle For a Commercial Vehicle Test

When approaching your booked CVR test, it's important to make some checks of your own, as the last thing you want is to fail over something silly and have to go through the time and trouble of a re-test. As such, you should ensure the following:

  • Your oil, water & windscreen washer fluids are fully topped up

  • The cargo & seat areas are cleared of personal belongings & the cargo area is clear for specific parts of the test to be completed

  • Your hubcaps are removed & tyres are pressurised to the correct inflation

  • Cleaning of the vehicle is advisable, with a particular focus under the body

  • The vehicle's engine is in a suitable state for testing, e.g. its timing chain/belt has been replaced in accordance with the manufacturer's instruction

  • Your safety belts are both working & visible. In the case of bus testing, all passenger seat buckles & belts should be working correctly.

  • The temperature gauge in the vehicle needs to show as ‘normal’ before arriving for inspection at your chosen approved test centre

  • Cleaning of your registration plate should be carried out in line with existing regulations

Another important aspect to remember on test day is that the person presenting the vehicle needs to bring along their passport or driving licence as ID. If this is not provided, the Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW) will not be able to be issued, even if the vehicle in question successfully passes the test.
