What You Need to Know About Voluntary Tests

At Argent Equipment, we’re the trusted name in commercial vehicle testing in Dublin and we are committed to helping our customers in every we can. As well as offering everything from HCV testing to tachograph installation and calibration, we’re keen to educate our readers about the obligations commercial vehicle owners have in Ireland. It’s why we create blogs like these!

Today, we’re here to talk to you about voluntary tests at CVR testing centres. These tests allow vehicle owners to conduct roadworthiness checks outside of the mandatory CVR tests, without impacting the vehicle's official test date or receiving a Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW).

Tailored to Your Specific Needs

A Voluntary Safety Test includes a pre-defined list of safety-critical items to be tested, and while it does not include all of the elements included in a typical HCV CVRT, for example, it does include checks on brakes, steering, lights, suspension, tyres and axles.

These tests can be tailored to focus on specific components determined by the vehicle operator, such as brakes, steering, lights, and suspension. Although no CRW is issued, these tests are seen as good practice and can supplement an operator's maintenance regime.

A test like this does not affect a light commercial vehicle’s risk rating, however, it does for a heavy commercial vehicle (HCV), which can positively impact an operator’s CVORI rating.  Furthermore, when used as part of a proactive approach, they help to ensure defects are addressed before they become bigger problems.
