What is an Engineer's Report & Why Is it Needed?

As the leading vehicle testing company in Dublin, we offer the full range of commercial vehicle testing services from our workshops on the North & South side of the capital. Today, we're here to talk about engineer’s reports and why they're needed.

Essentially, what we're talking about here is a report that's created as part of an investigation on a vehicle which has been involved in an accident or is in need of repair. The inspection is for the owner, detailing the vehicle's current condition.

So, How Do Engineer Reports Work?

What happens is that a qualified engineer will inspect your vehicle to determine how bad the damage is, with the findings being laid out in the report. The report created by the engineer will include important information like:

  • Where the damage is located & how bad it is

  • The estimated cost of the repair

  • The value of the vehicle prior to the accident happening

  • Whether the vehicle is a total loss and should be written off

After it's completed, the report is sent to you through the mail so that you can see if you agree with what's been found. It will usually also come with a cover letter to explain things a little more clearly. Should your vehicle be deemed to be a write-off, it's incumbent on the owner at this point to make sure that they're happy with the quoted worth prior to the accident.

If a total loss is diagnosed, it will fall into one of the following categories:

  • Category A - Scrap Only - When cars are so badly damaged that they can’t even be salvaged for parts & must be scrapped & must never again appear on the road.

  • Category B - Body Shell Should Be Crushed - Indicates extensive damage, some parts are salvageable, but should never again appear on the road.

  • Category C - Repair is possible, but the cost to do so exceeded the value of the vehicle. Vehicle can appear on the road again.

  • Category D - Repair is possible, but costs are significant in comparison to the vehicle's value. Can appear on the road again.

Generally speaking, the most commonly seen diagnoses belong to Categories C & D when dealing with road traffic accident cases.
