Answering FAQs About Your Certificate of Roadworthiness

As the leading vehicle testing company in Dublin, we get asked a lot of questions about the work we do. One particular aspect seems to attract more enquiries than others, and that's the Certificate of Roadworthiness or CRW for short.

In this article, we answer a few of the most frequently asked questions about CRWs and what your obligations are as a vehicle owner. So, let's waste no time getting started.

Why do I need a CRW?

An annual CRW inspection is mandated by law, meaning it's obligatory for Irish commercial vehicle drivers, and it serves as proof that your vehicle has met a set of basic safety requirements on the day it was tested. It tests visible and accessible items, but it cannot be viewed as a vehicle warranty.

Why has my CRW not arrived yet?

All things being well, the owner will get their CRW through the mail in just a day or two. However, if this hasn't happened, it could be for one of a couple of reasons:

  • There was a pass pending recheck of minor deficiencies result in the test. This means that the defects need to be rectified and the vehicle reinspected before it's issued.

  • You told the test centre that the vehicle was going through a change in ownership. In this case, sending out the CRW is delayed to allow time for the new owner to be listed.

How Can I Check the Expiry Date of my CRW?

To find out when your current CRW expires, simply visit the official CVRT website and enter your vehicle's registration number.

Why is my CRW valid for less than 12 months?

Your CRW covers less than 12 months because your vehicle's test was overdue. The system takes your annual obligation into account and back-dates your certificate to the date of obligation. This means there are zero benefits to be had from delaying your test.

I've lost my CRW. How do I get a replacement?

Again, just head over to the official CVRT website and enter your vehicle registration, after which the necessary steps will be shown to you.
