How to Go About Obtaining a CRW For Your Commercial Vehicle

If you’re using a commercial vehicle in Ireland, you’ll require a Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW) - something that you’ll need to renew every 12 months. To obtain your CRW, your vehicle will need to undergo a CVRT, which examines all the visible parts to ensure it’s safe to be used on the road.

The next step of the process is to book a test, which can be easily done by visiting the Argent Equipment website and clicking on the ‘Schedule Your Appointment’ link that appears in the top right-hand corner on every page. Once you’ve found a suitable time and date, you’ll then turn up on the day for your test.

A Valid Form of Photo Identification (ID)

It’s crucial that you remember to bring along some photo ID whether you’re coming for a van test, truck and trailer CVRT or any of the services we offer. If you don’t bring along your driving licence, public services card or passport, the test can still be carried out, but the actual issuance of your CRW will not be possible until you come back with it.

Then, depending on the result of the light or heavy commercial vehicle CVRT, you’ll receive one of the following:

  • A Pass Statement - followed closely by the CRW being automatically sent to the vehicle’s registered owner.

  • A Failure Report - which unfortunately would mean your vehicle has failed. In this instance, re-testing must occur at the same establishment within 21 days and without travelling more than 4,000 km.

  • Pass Pending Recheck of Minor Deficiencies Report - in the event of only a few minor issues being detected during your LCV or HCV CVRT, a re-test will not be needed. However, the vehicle will need to be taken back to the same testing centre to ensure the minor problems picked up have been rectified.

Once you pass your CVRT successfully, you’re then good for another 12 months, with the CRW only denoting that you’ve passed the test. Your CRW does not represent any kind of warranty or guarantee as to the overall condition of your vehicle.
