Answering Your FAQs About Motor Home & Campervan CVRT

We get asked a lot of questions about campervans at Argent and the CVRT rules that govern them, which is perhaps unsurprising due to the sheer popularity of the vehicle in Ireland. In fact, we get asked so many questions about campervan CVRT that we thought we'd put a blog together featuring some of the most common queries we get.

So, if you’ve got your notepad and pen ready, let's dive in and see what the CVRT rules say about campervan testing.

Q: Do all campervans require a CVRT?

A: No, not all. Those under 3 years of age are exempt. Every other campervan, however, under 3,500kg will require an LCV CVRT.

Q: How is a campervan or motor home defined?

A: Officially, it's a Category M vehicle that features accommodation space and contains; a table & seats, sleeping accommodation, storage space and cooking facilities.

Q: I don't use my campervan commercially. Do I still need a campervan test?

A: Yes. Everyone needs to, regardless of whether it’s for private or commercial use.

Q: Do I have to have a campervan test every year?

A: Actually, that depends on the age of your motorhome or caravan. The need for an LCV CVRT increases the older your vehicle gets, and it breaks down something like this…

  • Under 3 years of age - no campervan testing needed

  • 4-9 years of age - Biennially (every two years)

  • 10-29 years of age - Every year

  • 30-39 years of age - Biennially if used privately or annually if commercial

Q: Do my motor home's windows need to be e-marked?

A: Should your campervan have been registered after 1st Jan 1986, it needs to have a laminated safety windscreen and be marked as such (e-marked). As far as the vehicle's other windows are concerned, they need to be e-marked as being automotive safety glass.
