Bus Testing & Ambulance CVRT - What's Involved?

At Argent Equipment in Dublin, we offer a wide range of vehicle testing services for commercial vehicles. We often bring you blogs like this one to demystify what we do and the rules that govern our work. Today, we're here to talk about one service in particular.

Amongst the many services our customers get to enjoy are bus and ambulance CVRT tests. In this blog, we seek to provide some clarity on the process.

Applicable to All Buses & Ambulances Over 12 Months Old

Essentially, any ambulances or buses over the age of 12 months are subject to ambulance CVRT and bus testing, respectively. Applying to all ambulances and buses that have more than 8 passenger seats, it's a yearly test that must be passed in order to remain road legal.

The Certificate of Roadworthiness Test (CVRT) is designed to ensure any vehicle being driven commercially on Ireland's roads is safe. Only by carrying out these tests on an annual basis can countless lives be saved each year by avoiding unnecessary accidents.

How Long Does Bus & Ambulance Testing Take?

Generally speaking, an ambulance or bus test should take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and it involves all visible areas being checked for defects. Checking a range of factors, which all need to be verified in order for a pass to be given, internal components like seat belts are assessed, as are the visible external areas of the vehicle.

What Happens If You Pass/Fail?

If you pass your ambulance or bus test, your Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW) will be posted to the vehicle's owner. In the event of a fail, you’ll have 4,000 km or 21 days to come back for retesting - which you won’t need to pay for. However, if you don’t make it back during this period or distance, you’ll need to book an entirely new CVRT.
