What is a Truck & Trailer CVRT & Why is it Important?

At Argent Equipment, we offer a wide range of vehicle testing services that help keep Ireland’s road safe. One of the many types of testing service that we offer is the truck & trailer CVRT, which as the name would suggest, is designed to ensure a basic set of safety standards for commercial trucks and trailers.

Why is a Truck & Trailer Test Required?
Essentially, there are four primary reasons why a truck & trailer test is required on an annual basis:

  • It’s the only way to get a Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW)

  • Essentially checks are carried out that ensure the basic safety of the vehicle

  • This regular check results in fewer breakdowns

  • It’s mandated by law

What Does Truck & Trailer Testing Cover?

There are set requirements laid down as part of a truck & trailer CVRT, with the rules covering the following categories of Heavy Commercial Vehicle (HCV)

  • Goods vehicles with a gross weight exceeding 3,500 kg

  • Goods trailers with a gross weight exceeding 3,500 kg

Each truck & trailer test determines that, on the day, basic safety standards are met, with the areas that are accessible/visible examined. However, even when passed successfully, they do not represent any kind of condition warranty for the vehicle.

The elements examined typically include:

  • Brakes

  • Lights & markings

  • Wheels & tyres

  • Steering & suspension

  • Chassis & underbody

  • Tachograph

  • Speed limiter

  • Exhaust emissions

  • Electrical systems

  • Glass & mirrors

Once the test is completed, you’ll hopefully get a pass statement. If not, you’ll get a failure test report, with the owner needing to get the vehicle repaired and re-presented for testing.
