Useful Facts to Know About Commercial Vehicle Testing

At Argent Equipment, we've written many blogs about commercial vehicle testing, covering many aspects of HCV testing. However, it's a complex subject, so today, we will get into the weeds and explore some of the well-known facts about HCV CVRTs.

It's important to say that the details we're about to look at are no less critical to every commercial vehicle operator's obligation to drive safely and compliantly. So, if you're ready, let's dive in.

Fact #1 - When commercial vehicle testing identifies a vehicle (or goods trailer) as dangerously defective, a 'Fail Dangerous' sticker will be placed on it. Under Section 54 of the Road Traffic Act 1961, it's an offence for someone to drive a vehicle in this condition, and the driver knows that it may be a danger to the public when in motion.

Fact #2 - Vehicles that are kept off-road need to have an LCV CVRT or HCVT CVRT once per year, as components such as tyres, brake hoses, brake reservoirs, and brake lines can degrade, rust and deteriorate over time, even when they're not used.

Fact #3 - Testers can refuse to carry out a CVRT if they feel that the condition of any part of the vehicle or its equipment would make doing so unsafe. This is also the case if the load on the vehicle is not secured or the tester cannot fully access the necessary parts of the vehicle. If so, the test fee will be refunded, and the RSA informed.

Fact #4 - An Authorised RSA Officer can request a retest if they have concerns about the manner in which the test was carried out. As such, the re-test would be carried out under the supervision of said RSA officer.

Fact #5 - A retest must be conducted at the same commercial vehicle testing centre as the original LCV or HCV CVRT was taken. Another full test will be needed if a second testing centre is used.

Fact #6 - You can submit a complaint to the test centre you used in writing if you're unhappy with the service you received. You must include your contact details, registration number and the details of your problem. You should receive a written acknowledgement within three working days and a response within seven working days.

Fact #7 - Voluntary CVRTs can be taken. However, they do not result in a certificate of roadworthiness (CRW) being issued and do not affect your next test due date.
