Our tachograph installation service meets the highest industry standards, so you can hit the road knowing that you’re fully compliant with all Irish and EU laws that relate to driving vehicles of a certain type commercially. So, let’s see why it’s important.
What Is a Tachograph & What’s It For?
Tachographs are devices fitted inside larger commercial passenger or goods vehicles and they record data relating to speed, distance and overall driving time. Their primary use, however, is to ensure that employers and drivers follow drivers’ hours rules.
So, who needs a tachograph installation?
Basically, if you’re driving a vehicle that is subject to EU or AETR rules, then you must have a tachograph fitted and use it to adhere to the stipulated guidelines.
The rules are laid out as follows:
In terms of passenger vehicles (PSVs): Should you drive an armed forces, fire service or police vehicle, you will not be required to use a tachograph. This is also the case if your vehicle has 8 or fewer passenger seats.
In terms of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs): If your goods vehicle or vehicle combination is less than 3.5 tonnes, you will not need to operate a tachograph.
However, this only applies when the vehicle in question is being driven commercially. So, if you’re driving an HGV over 3.5 tonnes or a PSV with more than 8 passengers on a non-commercial, again you will not need a tachograph installation.
To be classed as non-commercial, you must meet the following criteria:
Passengers are not being charged to use the vehicle
The driver and other occupants are not being paid to work in or operate the vehicle
The vehicle is not being used on a commercial basis of any kind
