Speed Limiter Inspections - What You Need to Know

There are various cars on Ireland’s roads that have speed limiters and from 2022, they will be fitted to all new cars. Their primary role is to prevent vehicles from exceeding a set speed and when in place, the driver remains in complete control of their vehicle, limiting acceleration when required.

The most common type is the adjustable speed limiter, with intelligent varieties able to detect local speed limits and monitor road signs. The set speed can be exceeded by the driver, but it requires a hard push on the accelerator - something that’s necessary when the safer course of action is to increase speed.

Which Vehicles Require Speed Limiter Inspections?

If you’re operating a goods vehicle with a speed limiter that was registered on or after the 1st of January 1988 and its gross vehicle weight (GVW) exceeds 12,000 Kg, then you’re going to need a speed limiter inspection. The same applies to passenger vehicles exceeding 10,000 Kg GVW that hold 8 or more passengers, with the following guidelines also needing to be adhered to.

For vehicles registered on or after the 1st of October 2001 and before the 1st of January 2005, a speed limiter inspection is required when goods vehicles exceed 3,500 Kg GVW and passenger vehicles holding more than 8 passengers are under 10,000 Kg GVW.

We’re a Certified Speed Limiter Centre

At Argent, we’re a certified speed limiter centre, meaning that we can take care of all your inspection needs. Upon completion, we’ll provide you with a speed limiter sticker that you must display in a clear and obvious position - typically on the windscreen.

On it will be displayed the words ‘speed limiter fitted’, along with the national/international approval mark and the type of governing authority. The type approval number and our name as an authorised sealer will also be shown, along with the set speed (in Km/h), the date the limiter was most recently sealed and the vehicle registration number.
