So, What Exactly Are SQI Reports & What Are They For?

For the uninitiated, SQI reports represent official documentation that’s required when the purpose of use or some other detail of a vehicle has changed that means it no longer matches what’s displayed on the log book. In order to provide these SQI reports, the establishment in question needs to meet certain criteria.

SQI is actually an abbreviation of the term Suitable Qualified Individual and the report in question is what’s known as a revenue declaration of conversion. There are a number of common situations where this documentation becomes applicable.

They include:

  • Campervan conversions

  • Horsebox conversions

  • Commercial vehicle body conversions to box bodies, tipping bodies, curtain sider or luton bodies

  • Commercial to passenger jeep conversions

  • When seats are added or removed from any vehicle

When there is a change to the number of seats, the chassis length, the body type or weight, the wheel configuration, purpose of use or discrepancy on the log book, this engineer report ensures that you’re able to drive legally on Ireland’s roads.

What Criteria Must Testing Facilities Have?

As the terms suggests, the facility providing the SQI reports must have suitably qualified professionals in situ. This means that an engineering or technical qualification of Level 7 or higher needs to be in their possession. Also acceptable are appropriate accreditations from the Automotive Engineers Assessors or Engineers Ireland.

What’s also required is the correct equipment, as well as a minimum of 5 years working in a suitable technical environment - ideally of an engineering or automotive nature. In addition to this, the facility in question must also have adequate professional indemnity insurance to carry out the work.
