Motor Caravan Testing - Who Needs It & Why?

Keeping Ireland's roads safe for all motorists is of paramount importance, particularly as the number of road collisions is on the rise in Ireland. This is achieved in a number of ways, such as the NCT for domestic cars and CVRT testing for commercial vehicles.

So, what about motor caravans? Well, they need to be checked on a regular basis, too, with campervan testing being required to ensure roadworthiness. In this article, we'll look at who it applies to, what's required and why it's vital.

Why Is the Campervan Test Needed?

In addition to driver error, the biggest reason for campervans being involved in accidents is because they're poorly maintained. Campervan testing ensures this doesn’t happen, and it involves owners being in possession of a valid Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW).

Who does it apply to? Motorcaravans that weigh less than 3,500kg require a Light Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Test (CVRT), whereas those over 3,500kg need a heavy commercial vehicle (HCV CVRT).

"But I Don't Use My Caravan Commercially…”

Even if you're not using your motor caravan on a commercial basis, the LCV CVRT and HCV CVRT still apply - not an NCT. Should you be using a light trailer caravan under 3,500kg, there is no testing requirement, but the onus is on the owner and driver to ensure it presents to no danger to other road users.

The frequency of testing depends on the age of the vehicle. Motor caravans under 3 years are exempt, whereas those between 4-9 years old need campervan testing every 2 years. Campervans over this age need testing on an annual basis.
