Light & Heavy Vehicle Seatbelt Rules - What You Need to Know

When providing our comprehensive commercial vehicle testing services, our customers ask us a lot of questions. Because we offer seatbelt testing as part of these broad services, many of these questions concern seat belts and the laws that govern them.

This gave us the idea to create a blog that talked about them specifically - and here we are! So, come with us as we talk you through what you need to know to stay on the right side of the law.

Question - What are the specifics of the law on seatbelts in Ireland?

Answer—According to S.I. No. 240 of the Compulsory Use of Safety Belts and Child Restraints in Motor Vehicles Regulations 2006, seatbelts must be worn wherever they are fitted.

Question - Are lap belts legal?

Answer - Yes, they are. However, it is recommended that a three-point seatbelt is used for safety reasons unless the seat faces sideways.

Question - I have an older van with no seatbelts. Do I have to get them fitted?

Answer - No, there's no law that says you have to in Ireland. However, for your safety, we recommend you do.

Question - Are seatbelts checked during the CVRT test?

Answer - Yes, they're tested to ensure they're safe.

Question - Where do you get seatbelts certified?

Answer—While the Argent team can take care of your seatbelt testing, seatbelt certification can only be carried out by the seatbelt manufacturers themselves.

Question - How often should my seatbelts be checked?

Answer - They should be checked at every CVRT and routinely before using them. When carrying out your regular visual checks, you should ensure your seatbelts are not frayed, that they work, and for any other sort of damage.

If any damage is found or you discover that the seatbelt does not operate correctly, it should be replaced as soon as possible at an authorised dealer or garage.
