Regardless of whether its taxed privately, you need one of the following; a LCV ( light commercial test)  if it weighs 3,500kg or less or else you will need a HCV ( heavy commercial vehicle) test if it weighs more than 3,500kg to drive your camper or motorhome legally on the road in Ireland.

Is It Different from the National Car Test (NCT)?

Many people wrongly believe that the NCT - something that applies to standard cars in Ireland - applies to larger recreational vehicles like campervans and motorhomes. However, that’s not the case, as these vehicles are classed differently due to their size and require a different set of tests to ensure roadworthiness.

Testing wise what is needed for any camper or motorhome in Ireland that weighs in excess of 3,500kg, is a CVR Test, as it actually falls into the same category as commercial heavy goods vehicles. So as we have mentioned above that in this case, you’ll actually need to book your camper in for a heavy commercial vehicle test, if it weighs less than this  you will need to book your camper in for a light commercial test.
