Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Tests (CVRT) & Why You Need One

CVRT stands for Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Tests and they’re designed to ensure that any vehicle used for business on Ireland’s roads is roadworthy. This commercial vehicle test is one that applies to all goods vehicles, goods trailers and fast tractors used commercially, in addition to ambulances and buses that carry more than 8 passengers.

Typically carried out at an authorised centre, commercial vehicle testing is mandatory in Ireland, as with one carried out, you’re not legally allowed on the road. Let’s take a look at just some of the compelling reasons why it’s necessary.

Reason #1 - It’s the only way to get a certificate of roadworthiness

When your car or van passes successfully through a commercial vehicle CVRT, you’re given a certificate of roadworthiness (CRW) and this serves as proof that this is so.

Reason #2 - You get the reassurance of knowing that your vehicle is safe

Commercial vehicle testing each year ensures that every visible area of your car or van is in good working order, although it does not represent a warranty of any kind.

Reason #3 - Your Vehicle Spends Less Time at the Garage

An annual test of this kind ensures that major issues are spotted sooner, meaning less in the way of breakdowns and less time off the road at the garage.

Reason #4 - It’s Mandated By Law

The fact is that it’s written into Irish law that a CVRT needs to be carried out on an annual basis, with the penalty for not doing so meaning fines and penalty points on your licence.
