Bus & Ambulance CVRT - The Requirements Explained

While you might think that CVRT testing would be limited to trucks and lorries, the same rules apply to both buses and ambulances on Ireland's roads. That's right, both buses and ambulances need to be tested for roadworthiness each and every year.

As such, commercial buses that carry more than 8 passengers and ambulances must be booked in at authorised testing centres. When doing so, the person presenting the vehicle (who may not be the owner) will need to present their identification.

Applying to All Vehicles Over 1-Year-Old

Bus and ambulance testing must be carried out on all vehicles that are over 12 months old - in order to ensure that it meets the safety standards required to drive commercially in Ireland. When bringing your ambulance or bus to one of our testing centres, one recommendation we would make is to check that all seat belts are working and visible.

It's also wise to bring a copy of your seat belt certificate to the test, as this will ensure that no unnecessary delays arise.

What Gets Tested in Ambulance & Bus Testing?

The ultimate goal of your ambulance or bus CVRT test is to ensure that it is safe to drive commercially, which is why all visible elements will be inspected. Of course, there is much that is unique to an ambulance in terms of equipment, but it's the general roadworthiness that's being assessed here, nothing else.

If the vehicle inspection - which lasts between 30-60 minutes - results in a pass, the owner will be sent their Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW) automatically. If, on the other hand, something fails, you have 21 days or 4,000 km to book it back in for a re-test at the same centre. It's as simple as that!
