A Road-User's Guide to the CVRT From Argent Equipment

At Argent Equipment, we offer a wide range of vehicle testing services to customers across Dublin and beyond. Today, we're here to talk to you about the Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Test (CVRT) and everything you need to know about it.

Time is precious, so we'll get straight to it by first stating that the CVRT is a mandatory test in Ireland for all commercial vehicles more than 12 months old, including not just vans but also ambulances and buses with more than 8 passenger seats.

What is the CVRT For?

Whether talking about HCV CVRT for lorries, buses or vans, it's an annual requirement designed to keep Ireland's roads as safe as possible. As stated by the Road Safety Authority (RSA), commercial vehicle owners have a responsibility with regard to following:

  • Maintenance & repair

  • Daily walkaround checks

  • Providing an annual declaration (as part of the CVRT)

  • Regular services by qualified staff

  • Maintenance record keeping

  • Frequency of maintenance

The introduction of an effective maintenance program is not discretionary, and you can be prosecuted if non-compliance is discovered. Not only that, but it can land you with sanctions, penalty points and fines, so it's simply not worth the risk.

What Happens When You Pass or Fail?

Your CVRT will take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, with all visible components being inspected. If the vehicle presented (the person presenting needs to show a photo ID) passes, a Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW) will be mailed out to the owner's registered keeper.

If it fails, then the issues need to be fixed before resubmitting the vehicle for testing within 21 days of the failure. If you're unable to within this period, you'll have to carry out the whole test again, complete with another test fee.

Helping You Stay Legal On Ireland's Roads

While CVRTs might seem an annoyance, they serve a vital purpose - saving lives. They ensure that unsafe vehicles aren't able to be driven legally, meaning fewer accidents. So, if you're in need of CVRT testing you can trust, head to our website www.argent.ie for more details.
