5 Common Reasons People Fail Their  Commercial Vehicle Test

The Argent team delivers the full range of commercial vehicle testing services and we’re committed to doing everything we can to support you through the process. This includes giving you tips on ensuring your test goes smoothly - something we cover here in this blog.

Below, you’ll find five of the most common reasons that vehicles fail so you can take the necessary action to address these areas before you submit yours. So, without further delay, let’s get into the good stuff.

  • Reason #1 - Defective Front Suspension

One of the biggest factors that leads to a failure during a commercial vehicle test is defective front suspension. This might include an axle that’s obviously out of line, a missing or broken anti-roll bar or damaged or corroded mounting area.

  • Reason #2 - Damaged or Missing Brake Components

Next, a commercial vehicle CVRT may result in a failure if brake components are found to be missing or broken. We’re talking about things like cracked or missing brake levers, loose or worn mounting bolts or even incorrectly adjusted brake linings.

  • Reason #3 - Damaged or Missing Rear & Registration Plate Lamps

You may have a problem getting a pass if your rear or reversing lamps are either missing, broken or faulty. Also, if these plate lamps have broken lenses, aren’t clearly visible or contain moisture, this can lead to a fail and a retest being needed.

  • Reason #4 - Damaged & Insecure Steering Linkage

Other issues that could cause a problem with your HCV CVRT relate to your vehicle’s steering linkage. Worn or damage splines, obvious stiffness in your steering or a bent drop arm present serious safety issues meaning that it will lead to a fail.

  • Reason #5 - Cab & Bodywork

Lastly, you must ensure the integrity of your cab and bodywork’s structure is good. This means making sure that there’s no advanced rust or damage in your vehicle’s body structure and that there’s no water or fumes entering the cab.

Naturally, there’s much more involved in an HCV test, as it’s an extremely thorough assessment of all the visible parts of your vehicle. However, if you are able to make sure that these five areas are sound, the chances of a pass go up exponentially.
