What You Should to Know About LCV Testing & Why It’s Needed

If you drive a light commercial vehicle that has a gross weight of less than 3,500kg, you need to have an annual LCV test carried out to ensure that it is safe and roadworthy. Also extending to commercial jeeps, buses with more than 8 passengers, ambulances and vans, it’s similar in nature to the MOT test in that any failures need to be dealt with before the vehicle in question can be retested.

Typically speaking, an LCV CVRT takes anywhere between 30-60 minutes and everything that is accessible and visible is assessed. If your vehicle passes, then you'll be provided with a Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW) and it demonstrates that your LCV passed the required standards on the day. What it doesn’t do is offer any kind of warranty on your vehicle’s condition.

Why Light Commercial Vehicle Testing is Needed

In addition to the obligations that commercial vehicle operators in Ireland have with regards to maintenance and daily walk-arounds, the LCV testing system is designed as a preventative measure that ensures that our LCVs on our roads are safe. It’s also a measure of how well the vehicle in question has been maintained throughout its lifecycle.

When arriving for your LCV test at your local testing centre, it’s vital that you bring a valid form of ID, which needs to be either a valid passport, driving licence or public services card. If you don’t, you will still be able to have your vehicle tested, but if your vehicle passes you’ll need to produce your relevent id so avoid the frustration and ensure you bring yours along.
