HCV Testing - Some Things to Know From the Tester’s Manual

At Argent Equipment in Dublin, we’re one of the leading commercial vehicle testing centres in the country and we regularly bring you articles like this one to better inform you about what we do. We’re back again this time with more to help provide some clarity on some of the terms you might expect to see when using our services.

So, let’s take a look at some of the commonly used terms in the industry…

  • CVRT - Is a Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness test, something that every commercial truck, van or car must have conducted every 12 months. These can be categorised as initial, periodic, partial and re-test CVR.

    • Initial CVRT - Due 12 months after a new vehicle is registered

    • Periodic - Applies to Heavy Commercial Vehicles (HCV) after initial test

    • Partial/Enforcement - may include all or some of the test items and is typically conducted when directed by a CVR inspector or RSA Officer.

    • Retest - Conducted when vehicle fails initial or periodic CVRT.

  • CVR Testing Centre - this is the role that we carry out, as an authorised establishment with equipment that meets all testing guidelines.

  • CoVIS - is the computerised RSA system that’s used to process tests on lane equipment. This is the system used by testers to record relevant data and details of defects.

  • Method of Testing - this describes the methods by which the test was carried out and the equipment used.

  • Reasons for Failure - as you might expect, this term essentially refers to reasons behind a vehicle failing a CVRT.

  • Design Gross Vehicle Weight (DGVW) - this refers to the maximum permissible laden mass of the vehicle. This takes all vehicle parts into account.

  • Manufacturer’s Statutory Plate - this is a label or plate affixed by the vehicle’s manufacturer that allows it to be identified.
