Guidance On Seat Belt Certificates - What You Need to Know

There are a number of things that Large Goods Vehicle (LGV), Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) and Passenger Carrying Vehicle (PCV) drivers need to do to remain compliant and legally drive on Ireland’s roads. From HGV PCV to daily walk-around checks, these obligations are there for a reason - to keep everyone on the road safe. Another such obligation are seat belt certificates.

Anyone driving any of the above named vehicles need to ensure that their seat belt certificates are valid and up to date. This is especially the case when talking about passenger vehicles that are used in the organised transport of children, which need to adhere to the new legal guidelines set down in S.I. No. 367 of 2011.

Other things you should know about seatbelt certificates include:

  • If a bus is owned with safety belts equipped that don’t have the relevant safety belt certificates, they should get in touch with their main dealer, body builder or the manufacturer’s homologation department to ensure it meets all appropriate regulations and standards.

  • The homologation department also holds precise records of the regulations pertaining to any given vehicle from when it was manufactured, upon request.

  • If the installation that currently exists in a vehicle meets the rules required to possess valid seatbelt certificates, the homologation department should be able to confirm it in written form to include Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

Something else that you should be aware of is that if you’re the owner of a bus that has seatbelts, it’s necessary for you to inform all passengers of the need to wear them while seated and when in motion.
